Farmland

4 leased acres in Victor, NY

Farm History

After apprenticing for 2 years on organic vegetable farms in California & the Hudson Valley, I decided to start Mud Creek Farm in my hometown of Rochester.  This is our first year of operation.  70 CSA members pick up vegetables at the farm in Victor every week.

The land is owned by 83-year-old Robert Holmes, who had a certified organic beef operation for many years, and is committed to keeping the land in chemical-free, sustainable production.

Philosophy

Mud Creek Farm strives to produce the healthiest, tastiest vegetables around!
We are committed to using responsible farming practices which sustain and improve the health and vitality of the entire farm system, including the soil, the air, the water, the plants, the animals, and the people we feed.  We do not use chemical pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, fertilizers, or GMOs, in our growing practices.

Soil

Fertile, well-drained, gravelly loam.

Weed Control

Hoes, hand-weeding, & mechanical cultivation with my 1948 Farmall Cub tractor “Princess Rose III”.

Pest Management

Preventative strategies.  Healthy soil & ample water = healthy plants able to hold their own against pests.  Rotations, cover crops, diversified bed planting, and attracting beneficial insect predators.  Row covers keep crops protected for the first few weeks in the field.  Organic certified sprays are used (rarely) as a last resort.

Water Use

Drip irrigation.

Workers

Myself, friends & family, work-trade CSA members, volunteers.

Organic Certification

We are not certified Organic, although we practice organic methods
